| Both www.talkaboutcomics.com and www.webcomicsnation.com show symptoms of lack of maintenance. Prepare to find other options for forums and/or comic hosting. |

The domain registration for graphicsmash.com expired yesterday (2011-06-17). UPDATE But it and some of the others were renewed shortly after. The current expiration dates for the Modern Tales empire follow.

I don't suppose there's any chance of the forums being archived somewhere? _________________ In case of emergency break time and space

| My forum admin powers include generating a private database backup, so if someone wants to set up a clone of some forum subset on their own server, things can be arranged. |

Oh I wish. Not much chance of hosting my own server. Nah, I'm just lamenting the loss of all the conversations that have taken place here.
The "wayback machine" archive has recorded some instances of the forum, but it doesn't appear to be a complete history. _________________ In case of emergency break time and space

Some of them have been renewed; I'll keep the second post in this topic up to date.
If you did capture a domain, the first thing to happen would probably be a lot of spam hitting whatever mail server you assign to it. |

I would like one of those backups. It would be so much easier than trying to get HTTrack to work.
One question though, do you know if the backup would work with phpbb3? |

One of the phpBB installation options is a version 2->3 conversion, so it should be possible. I don't know if just the old database is enough; a skeletal version 2 installation might be necessary.
Anyway, start by getting approval from the forum moderator(s). |

I'm the moderator of Carry On and I have the TAC for Magpie House Design. NeoTravis has done a great job setting up the new Forum when we discovered TAC was on its way out.
I personally would hate to lose the years of discussions in the TAC forum for my Magpie House Design site, and I'm sure the moderators of 21stCentury Fox (my husband Scott), Cross Time Cafe, By The Saints, Freefall, and several others in our "family" would like to see a back-up site as well, Bo. We've shared a lot of ideas over the years.
It could be a simple archive of the discussion boards without ability to post new material, but readable.
If you could do that for us, I for one would be eternally grateful! _________________ Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.

OK... if TAC doesn't get renewed, I'm game for moving it over to my hosting plan, if a few things happen first. I'd need it to be updated (by someone else) to the latest version of PHPBB or a more lightweight alternative; I'd need all threads that have not been updated in twelve months to be locked (by someone else) plus perhaps some mechanism to do that automatically every time a post hits that threshold. And I' want some design changes so my ads could run on it, because even a smallish forum can be expensive to run.
A small financial outlay on my part will be fine but in the long term, it should be budget-neutral for me and not require too much effort on my part.
I would still prefer for the current owners to maintain TAC properly.
Bo, do you have any usage statistics? _________________ Reinder Dijkhuis

Hacking the automatic pruning function to lock inactive topics instead of deleting them would probably work.

Sticking ads in the page templates is known to work. (You're looking at an example right now.)

Just tens of thousands of spammer registrations per year; phpBB doesn't collect much data. You'll have to ask the server admins about traffic. (Yep, good luck with that....) |

Hmmm. Is Bad Behavior still running on there, and if it is, is it still up to date? What alternatives exist?
I brought up the change in ads because that's bound to be controversial in the case of what technically would count as a hostile takeover. I also think now it would be prudent to give people the choice, as you mentioned before, to spin off parts of the forums unto their own spaces. Then those forums would not be duplicated on the 'new' TAC or Yapaboutcomics or whatever. _________________ Reinder Dijkhuis

| More symptoms: the New Today page stopped working. (The RSS feed hasn't worked in many months.) |
