It's been so long since I last sold a copy of The Koala Bares book it was a bit of a surprise to get the order!

Apart from the fact it's almost 10 years old now (and the fact I don't do a lot of overt promotion for it) it's still a mystery to me why - given the number of visitors to the site - I'm not selling one of these every three days instead of every three months... Confused

Of course, me not actually producing any new pages for almost 3 months might have something to do with it!

I would have bought one, but frankly I live with my parents and they would be wondering just what I was doing ordering something like that.

Honestly, I can't really think of any situation where I would be able to put it in a bookcase with my other books, and I wouldn't buy it just to hide it, because it's not porn for Christsake!

I love the comic and read it every time you do an update, but I do not think I would be able to have the book in my house.

You need to make an e-book edition. Put it on the Kindle and the iPad!

Yes for the iPad, especially once I work out what the specs are.

No for the Kindle - at least not until it becomes a colour device, also I believe Amazon has some kind of "you pay us money to allow people to download your publication" thing going on, which I efinitely don't like at all.

BTW - I just sold 20 copies to British Naturism, for their shop I presume. I have sold to them previously but not for a few years.

oh well, that's a shame - I don't know how old you are, but why would your parents be going through your bookcase anyway? Maybe when you move out then... Cool

Personally, I would put the book right to the middle of my bookcase, and no need to hide it. Everyone knows that I'm a naturist... And yes, I would definitely buy one, if I was able to pay for it properly - unfortunately my Visa card doesn't have internet transactions enabled, and I didn't have that many reasons to pay for another card being issued, yet. Maybe in future, if the book is still available.

I'm sure it'll be around for a while longer yet... when I'm down to the last box I'll be sure to let everyone know. I used to allow cheque payments but the bank puts such a huge fee on foreign currency transactions it wasn't worth the effort. It's a shame there isn't some kind of world currency.

If people buy them, do you autograph them or no?

Sure... if I'm asked to Very Happy

Pretty much no one does ask - personally I don't know how much value my scrawl would add to it and I always feel like I'm vandalising the book when I do it anyway... but if that's what you want then sure thing.

(hm, now you mention it... maybe I should charge extra for that... and I suppose I could always offer a character sketch for more $$ too...)

Sure, that's a great idea. I've actually purchased the limited edition autographed Roomies! Book with a sketch inside from David Willis of http://www.shortpacked.com

He even does numbered limited prints that sell out frequently. Have you ever thought about doing a 2nd book? Maybe post a thread to gauge reader interest on having a compilation of stories that have been done since.

Pretty much every other comic artist does it, why shouldn't you?

And speaking as a writer myself, sometimes you need to see the fan interest to continue on. I've been working on something for over two years now that I have people interested in. Do I work on it every day? No, I have other commitments. Do I consider giving up on it? Yes, but I don't think I ever could.

If it's helping you to pay the bills, then why not? Cultivate a fanbase and go for it man!

If you did a second book, I'd say collect some of the Bare Pit stories. Plus add an exclusive short story in the collection that won't be shown on the website.

I don't anticipate printing any more books for the forseeable future. I still have a whole heap of the first one to offload and printing isn't very financially viable. Not only do I have to fork out more to get it printed in the first place, then there's storage - postage costs make it less attractive to overseas buyers (the majority of the cost for The Koala Bares is postage).

I was in talks with someone interested in covering the costs of publishing everything from Frank.Cam thru to Birthday Suits in four separate volumes - while that hasn't fallen thru, with the recession and other issues it's certainly been put it on the back burner, possibly forever!

As far as print on demand is concerned I'll side with the judgement of John Allison (Scary Go Round/ Bad Machinery) a much more successful publisher than I who has done extensive research into the matter and claims he has found that it doesn't really add up cost wise.

I'll be interested to see how things pan out with the i-Pad as there might certainly be a market there.

Depends of what you consider adding up.
In a field I'm watching (role-playing games), there's a lot of people publishing their products through ways like lulu.com (mostly Europe-based I think, but I doubt there aren't some similar in he US).
Basically they provide an electronic version of their book and set a price.
Those who want the books order through lulu.com who then sends a printed version (I don't know if it's really POD or if they print in batches -10 or 20 copies each time-) and pays the writer/publisher's part then.
I guess it mainly depends on what you expect as a return.
