Page 21 of Chapter 4 shows the immediate aftermath of our heroes' battle with the Vesparion, and takes us back to another battle begun in a distant asteriod field...

To understand that aftermath may require a little explaining-the Vesparion are a classic classic hive species, with greatly varying intelligence among their members. The Drones, (worker or soldier) have the intellect of smart animals, and are mainly telepathically directed by the queen or high-ranking workers of normal humanoid-level intelligence, like the ones that were operating the bridge controls of the mothership.

The queen herself is generally of above-average intelligence, but has to put most of that intellect to running a vast hive of possibly billions of Vesper workers of different ranks and functions-all her children and most sterile.
