Thanks everyone who came along to the web & mini comix thing yesterday. It was hard to get into the venue, what with the thousands upon thousands of eager comics fans who were clearly somewhere else, but once inside, the rewards were plentiful. These rewards included headaches, numbness, hypothermia, frostbite, gangrene and, in many cases, death.
Yes, there was no heating in the Ice Palace. At least there was a toilet, and by that I mean there was a walk-in freezer containing a rusty bucket and a newspaper. Anyone who used the walk-in freezer was asking for trouble. Not only did they have to avoid the hanging beef carcasses (and Rocky Balboa, who was busily pummelling them throughout the day) but they also risked having their cocks fall off when exposed to the sub-zero conditions.
At least the Peckerwood table was in the main valley of the Ice Palace. Overlooking the valley was a dark, forbidding zone called the “stage area”, which was ravaged by brutal winds, frequent snow storms, and the occasional hungry polar bear. Few explorers braved this mountainous region, despite the attraction of a small movie theatre showing The Jungle Book with the sound turned off. Those who did venture upstairs rarely made it back down again. One poor soul was impaled by a falling icicle, but he survived, thanks to a passing Inuit, who rushed him to hospital on a husky-powered sledge. After lunch, I saw a couple of weary travellers stumbling down the stairs, their eyes revealing the horror they’d endured. I asked them if they’d seen anyone else up there, but all they could do was shake their heads pitifully, before they drew their final breaths. I like to think their demise came as a blessing.
The Peckerwood table was sandwiched between Willie Hewes and Capes & Drapes. There was a grit and determination among us valley-dwelling survivors that helped us endure the ever-worsening conditions, and we all did our bit for the community. Willie appeared to be selling far more comics than anyone else, so while she foraged for wood, I stole half her cash and exchanged it for blankets. Capes & Drapes donated all the unwanted flyers they'd been handed, and Rocky came out of the walk-in freezer during his lunch break, armed with a pack of matches. Pretty soon we had a decent fire going, and as we huddled round the blaze, wrapped up in our blankets, we talked fondly about life back in civilisation, where warmth could be created at the flick of a switch, and hot beverages were freely available.
Now I'm back home, sick, tired and cockless.
It was great to meet my fellow explorers, and I only hope those who made it back alive are not too traumatised to return to the Ice Palace in 2009. Next time, we'll bring coffee, tents, a portaloo and a pack of huskies.

Hey Rob, funny review of the day mate. Nice to see you again and I hope you did not have to spend too long doing your "Dutys" for Mr Thing.
I read PECKERWOOD and thought it was great (I even avoided the temptation to read it on the train home and read the less interesting Giraffe anthology). Anyway, must go as I am living a double life at the moment as Patrick Bateman and I need to clean some blood and guts up.
Cheers

Hey, Jamie! Good to see you again and glad you liked our new baby. You can read this one again and again and it won't fall to pieces, honest.
Like the Bateman reference. Ever seen the TV show Dexter? It's one of the best things on the telly, in my not so humble opinion. Serial killers are where it's at.
Oh, and no, didn't have to do any duties, coz Pete was kind enough to be on holiday (and besides, I wisened up this year and said "I don't wanna" on the exhibitors form).
Take it easy - see you at Bristol, hopefully...

Umm... no idea really. But it's already getting pretty dang hot out here on the west coast, so I think east coast will be pretty warm. This summer is going to be a scorcher. How is it in the UK?
