Dear Allegiance Rangers,

A lot of news to cover this time, as the Uber-Neno has been super busy, creating new entertaining treats. To wit:

*************************************************************
Announcing the Debut of Neno's New Blog, Flappers and Cads
*************************************************************
Fans of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Woody Allen, P.G. Wodehouse, and Oscar Wilde may enjoy my new blog, Flappers and Cads, the ruminations of a wealthy self-admitted layabout residing in a madcap, screwball '20s mansion.

For best results, read the earliest post ("1:00 pm") to the most recent, as a story of sorts is forming. Feel free to leave comments and suggestions. You can peruse it here: http://flapperscads.blogspot.com/.

Garbo Talks! Again!
********************
Last September, I wrote here that only one of MGM star Greta Garbo's sound films, and none of her silent films, had been released on DVD. I also told you of the Greta Garbo Message Board petition to encourage the powers that be to release her films on DVD.

Something must have worked, because Warner Home Video has now released a magnificent 10-DVD boxed set, Garbo: The Signature Collection, featuring Camille, Anna Karenina, Ninotchka, Queen Christina, Grand Hotel, Mata Hari, Flesh and the Devil, The Temptress, The Mysterious Lady, and both the English and German versions of Anna Christie.

The set also includes the nine remaining minutes of the only lost Garbo film, The Divine Woman, and a new Garbo documentary which will also be premeiring on Turner Classic Movies on September 8th, 2005.

If you've ever wanted to take the plunge into the passionate, sordid, exquisite world of Garbo, now's the time. As Garbo said: don't be stingy, baby. Check it out here:

The Dwarfman Cometh
*************************
Finished, done, complete, kaput, and off my drawing board: the first nine pages of the first Signifiers spin-off series: Landlock, the Heat-Seeking Dwarf! Sworn to protect and incite an uncaring Establishment, Landlock is held against his will by The Pollution Pioneers, who kidnapped him at an anti-war rally.

Landlock, the Heat-Seeking Dwarf takes place in the same whacked-out universe as The Signifiers, and features a Kirby-licious '70s, freestyle look.

Landlock has been appearing in Tim Corrigan's ACA (All Comics APA). The first eight pages will also be reprinted in The Signifiers #1.

Click here for original Landlock art for sale: http://www.nenoworld.com/OriginalArtNew.html. Three pages are already sold (the first page to rare comics dealer John Haines (see "Huzzas for Hoohah" below).

This is the dawning of the age of Landlock!

New Mystery Drawing Revealed!
**********************************
It’s with great regret that I report no NenoWorld Allegiance Rangers (not even master of obscure cartoon knowledge Kel Crum) was able to correctly guess the source of this Mystery Drawing: http://www.nenoworld.com/MysteryDrawing10.html.

The Drawing is one of many beautiful illustrations George Herriman (Krazy Kat) produced in the ‘20s and ‘30s for the Archy and Mehitabel books by Don Marquis, books of fanciful poetry concerning a cockroach and a cat. All three of the Archy and Mehitabel books were collected in a 1940 hardcover, The Life and Times of Archy and Mehitabel (Doubleday and Co.), from which the Mystery Drawing was taken. These books are well worth checking out for fans of Herriman and playful ‘30s whimsy.

To read more about Don Marquis, check out: http://www.donmarquis.org/

Next report: another exciting Mystery Drawing Contest!

El Muerto and El Neno: They’ve Got it Goin’ On
**********************************************
I am super proud to announce I’ve been given an opportunity to draw a pin-up for a future issue of Javier Hernandez' comic book series El Muerto. Not only is El Muerto a rockin’ cool story, it’s also being produced as a full length feature film (starring Wilmer Valderrama from That '70s Show) as we speak!

The pin-up has been sent to Mr. Hernandez, and I’ll announce its publication here. In the meantime, take a gander at this poster produced for the El Muerto movie:

They Say It's Your Birthday....
****************************************
Best wishes to code-writin’ Jake Hoster, soon-to-be-retired-and-free Bob Beck, and Mark (the Shark) Stover, all Allegiance Rangers who celebrated their birthdays in the last two months.

May your candle-blown wishes come true.

If you believe I most likely do not have your birth date on file, feel free to email it to me at: mneno@columbus.rr.com.

Classic Hollywood: The Sequel
**********************************
Almost exactly a year ago I brought to your attention a new central Ohio rental store specializing in classic films, Classic Hollywood. With more than 74,000 classic films for rent, classic film lovers could get their Lon Chaney, Will Rogers, Preston Sturges and Fred Astaire fixes with free popcorn while they were at it.

Alas, Classic Hollywood the central Ohio rental store has closed. It has been reborn, though, as Classic Hollywood the online rental store. Now classic film lovers can access Classic Hollywood’s treasure house no matter where they live! Classic Hollywood features many silent films nearly impossible to find.

Check it out! Classic Hollywood’s website remains the same: http://www.classic-hollywood.com. Tell ‘em the Culture Czar of America sent you!

*************************************************************
For the Very First Time: Quacky Pig Comic Strips for Sale!
*************************************************************
The Culture Czar of America is now crazily selling original artwork for some of Quacky Pig and Friends' greatest comic strips!

Own a piece of history! These strips, dealing with such important issues of the day as The Lord of the Rings, Davey and Goliath, and O-Town, originally appeared on the gone-but-not forgotten Quacky Pig and Friends website, and are one of a kind. When they're gone, they're gone, and you can purchase using easy-to-use PayPal!

Each page is drawn with brush, pen, and india ink on acid-free bristol board. The art size area is 12 1/2 inches by 3 5/8 inches. The board size is 16 1/2 inches by 7 5/8 inches. Comic strips are $50.00 each; prices include first class postage and insurance.

See a fine selection of them here: http://www.nenoworld.com/OriginalArtNew.html.

MGM Films: Have You Seen These?
**********************************************
Some of you may be aware that we at the Neno Homestead have been slowly, but persistently, watching every MGM film still in existence, in order of release. We started with 1924, the year three film companies merged to become Metro Goldwyn Mayer, and have worked (I’m using that word loosely) our way up to 1929. Spite Marriage, starring Buster Keaton, was the most recent film we’ve watched. The next: Across to Singapore, starring Joan Crawford.

Unfortunately, many silent and sound films no longer exist; they were allowed to decay and often were destroyed by the very companies who created them! Some exist in only a partial state. Some exist only in 16mm prints, the original 35mm negatives long gone. Some are in complete and good condition, but are in private hands, or are owned by corporations who have no incentive or desire to make them available to the general public. I have to add here that Time Warner, one of the largest owners of old films is at last beginning to release silent films on DVD. Please support these releases, and ensure there will be future releases, by purchasing them!

Here is a link to an updated list of MGM films I (and others!) would like to see. Some of these films are claimed to no longer exist in any form. Have you seen any of these films? http://www.nenoworld.com/MGMWantedDeadorAlive.html

Please look the list over and post any info you can provide to The NenoWorld Forum at
http://www.talkaboutcomics.com/viewforum.php?f=203; or, email me at: meno@columbus.rr.com. Any news I gather from you will be reported in a future Allegiance Rangers Report for all to share.

Huzzas for Hoohah
***************************
Connoisseurs of old comic book fanzines (of which there are precious few nowadays - connoisseurs and fanzines) will go nuts over Joe Lovece and rare comic book dealer John Haines' website Hoohah!. Now in its second volume, Hoohah! entertainingly uncovers hidden, obscure, and fascinating treasures of comic books past. Don't try this at home - these gentleman know what they're talking about! As Haines told me about the site, "We dig deeper."

The current site features the unpublished original art for what is most likely the very first story Joe Simon and Jack Kirby collaborated on, an article on Lloyd Jacquet's obscure Reg'lar Fellers Heroic Comics, an article on Harry Donenfeld's Spicy pulp magazines, lots of letters, and more!

Lovece and Haines also feature tons of the following for sale on the Hoohah! Collectables page: comic books, original comic book art, Big Little Books, pulp magazines and science fiction digests, vintage paperbacks, movie memorabilia, and more!

Take a course in obscure comics history here: http://www.geocities.com/missile_bender/hoohah/vol2_no2.html.

When Technocrats Run the Library Part III
********************************************************
Some steadfast Allegiance Rangers have asked about the status of my online petition. Said petition encourages the Columbus Metropolitan Library to once again allow the use of their self-checkout machines to be voluntary instead of mandatory.

In addition to the already-mentioned Columbus Alive interview with me concerning the self-check out trend (http://www.columbusalive.com/2005/20050209/020905/02090511.html), Library Journal.com has posted an article on the situation, with a few quotes from an interview me and the petition. You can read it here: http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA512201.html

Also, another Ohio paper, the Akron Beacon Journal, has interviewed me for a similar article; more news on that in the next report.

In the meantime, the online petition has garnered fifty signatures so far. If you haven't signed the petition yet, please consider doing so. It's quick and easy - just click here: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/ikolp6gv/petition.html

Kodachrome, They Give Us Those Nice Bright Colors....
*************************************************************
Speaking of petitions, several are now circulating to prevent Kodak from discontinuing the production of K40 Super-8 film, used by amateurs and professionals alike (Oliver Stone, for example, has used Super-8 in such films as JFK, Nixon, The Doors, and Natural Born Killers). An article in the New York Times describes how Kodak decided to announce their discontinuance of K40 Super-8 one day after the May 8, 2005 celebration called Global Super 8 Day (good timing!).

Kodachrome K40 has been the gold standard Super-8 film stock for forty years; now, though, Kodak is wanting Super-8 users to use their (inferior) Ektachrome film instead. Kodachrome's chemical and color properties are not only superior and unique; Ektachrome film, by all accounts, fades much faster. The look of video doesn't begin to compare. Performing a search for "Super-8" on Google reveals just how big a worldwide movement Super-8 filmmaking still is.

You can read the New York Times article here: http://www.nytimes.com/learning/students/pop/articles/31koda.html.

Check out the official Kodak Super-8 page here: http://www.kodak.com/US/en/motion/super8/index.jhtml?id=0.1.4.4.10&lc=en.
