Sony UK: "PS3 will come in at £42,500"

Sony Computer Entertainment UK MD Ray Maguire has revealed that PlayStation 3 will retail at GBP 42,500 when it launches in the UK on November 17th, but has defended the price point as "a bargain" for consumers.



Speaking exclusively to Tozzer.com, Maguire outlined Sony’s pricing plans for their forthcoming games console. “The PS3 includes a fully-featured Mercedes CLK500 coupe, with leather seats, a five-litre V8 engine, and a 12-CD Blaupunkt stereo. When you consider that a stand-alone Mercedes CLK500 has a list price of over GBP 45,000 you’ll realise what a bargain the PS3 really is.

“You may ask why we’re including the CLK500 in the first place. In our minds, there was no other viable option. Sure, we tested the BMW M3, but to be honest, the handling just wasn’t there. We’re confident that when consumers take the PS3 for a spin, they’ll reach the same conclusion. In fact, we’ve coined a phrase to represent our philosophy: Driving = Believing.

“But first and foremost, the PS3 is a games machine. The games are where it’s at. Games, games, games. Yeah, we all know about the games, and frankly, the subject’s getting old. What people forget is that the PS3 is also a high-powered luxury automobile with great build quality and more leg room than anything else in its class. All that, for forty-two and a half grand. How is that not a bargain?”
